Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
About Skating in Iceland Figure Skating Club (FSC)

1.)Who is Iceland FSC?

Iceland FSC Club # 1190 was chartered by US Figure Skating back in 1959, which makes Iceland the longest continuously chartered skating club in Houston, Texas.

2.)How do I become a member?

New membership is obtained by filling out a club membership form, a US Figure Skating membership form and submission of club membership fee along with forms. The link for membership form can be found under Application & Form from the main IFSC main page.

3.)How much does it cost to become a member of Iceland FSC?

1st  club membership $100.00 annually (additional family members $70)
2nd club membership $50.00 annually.

1st club membership for Coaches who meet club requirements is free.  Other coaches pay US Figure Skating fee only.  Contact the Iceland FSC President for free membership requirements.

4.)What are the benefits of Iceland FSC membership?

Membership in Iceland FSC also makes you a member of US Figure Skating, the national governing body of competitive figure skating in the United States.

You will be allowed to participate in our Freestyle, Moves in the Field, Pairs or Dance test sessions without incurring an additional fee for non-members.  You may also test at other clubs in the Texas Figure Skating Association without incurring an out-of-club fee.

Iceland FSC holds club ice sessions  (we notify our members well in advance) and we provide partial (sometimes full) reimbursement of regional, sectional and national competition entry fees.

5.)What is the average cost for learning how to skate?

Sharpstown Ice Skating Center currently provides group lessons for adults and children (newbies)
For approximately $80-100 per eight week period.

Iceland FSC has resales of used equipment and apparel.  We have an assortment of skating dresses, accessories, and even skates and blades.  Most of these items were used by club members who are now donating them to Iceland to raise funds for skaters in our club.

Coaches fees will usually cost approximately $60.00 to $75.00 per hour.  A young skater would most likely start out taking group lessons first to see if they really like it.  If they do, they might get a coach to give them 1 fifteen minute or half hour lesson per week.  If they still like it, they can take some group lessons, supplemented by additional coaching lessons to improve as quickly as the skater and their parent(s) desire.  More lessons = faster progress!!!  Your skater can go as slow or as fast as they and their parent(s) want to go.  The key is getting the right coach.  More on that later!

Now for Costs!

A serious skater who gets half hour lessons 5 days a week, skates 2-4 hours per day, competes at local and regional competitions, has a choreographer help them with the presentation of their skaters programs, has custom dresses made, and does some form of cross training to assist their figure skating could easily realize expenses in the neighborhood of $10,000 to $15,000 average annually.

Keep in mind - that's the cost for very serious minded skaters skating at probably the Juvenile level upwards.

At the lower end, it could cost a little over $100.00 monthly for mostly group lessons, public ice sessions, an occasional private lesson by a coach (once a week for 15 minutes), while using regular clothes from home, or buying used articles from the resale market.  So as you can see, there is room for every budget if your skater likes to skate.

6.)Who should I contact when I want to have my competition forms signed?

You should receive an electronic Member in Good Standing form signed by the club President that you can print and attach to entry forms requiring a club officer's signature.  If you did not receive a form contact the club secretary.  You may also have a US Figure Skating recognized club officer sign your entry form.  The position of test chair IS NOT an officer of our club.

The following individuals are eligible to sign competition forms.
